Klondike vs Spider Solitaire
Klondike and Spider are the two most popular Solitaire variants in the world. Klondike is the classic — the game most people think of when they hear “Solitaire.” Spider is the deep-strategy alternative that rewards careful planning and patience.
But they play very differently. Here’s how they compare.

How the Gameplay Differs
Klondike: Build Up to Foundations
In Klondike, you build four foundation piles from Ace to King, one per suit. Your main task is uncovering face-down cards in the 7-column tableau and moving cards to foundations as efficiently as possible. You draw from a stock pile when you’re stuck.
The draw mechanic (turn 1 or turn 3 from the stock) introduces significant randomness — if the cards you need are buried deep in the stock, you may need multiple passes to find them.
Spider: Build Down in the Tableau
Spider has no foundations during play. Instead, you build complete suited sequences (King down to Ace, all same suit) within the 10-column tableau. When you complete a full sequence, it’s automatically removed from the game.
There’s no single-card drawing. Instead, you deal 10 new cards (one per column) when you’re stuck, which can dramatically change the board state for better or worse.
Difficulty Comparison
Klondike Difficulty
Klondike difficulty is relatively fixed:
- Turn 1 (draw 1): Easier, gives you access to every stock card
- Turn 3 (draw 3): Harder, restricts which stock cards are accessible each pass
Most luck comes from the initial deal and stock pile arrangement.
Spider Difficulty Scales
Spider offers three distinct difficulty levels:
- 1 suit: Only Spades — every build is automatically suited. Similar difficulty to Klondike Turn 1.
- 2 suits: Spades and Hearts — you must track suit matching. Significantly harder.
- 4 suits: All four suits — extremely challenging. Requires deep strategic thinking.
This scalable difficulty is a major advantage of Spider — it grows with your skill.
Strategy Depth
Klondike Strategy
Klondike strategy focuses on:
- Choosing which face-down cards to prioritize uncovering
- Deciding when to play cards to foundations vs. keeping them in the tableau
- Managing which card to play from Draw 3 stock passes
- Using empty columns to reorganize (only Kings can fill empties)
Strategy matters, but luck plays a significant role. Some Klondike deals are unwinnable regardless of skill.
Spider Strategy
Spider strategy is deeper and more complex:
- Maintaining empty columns as flexible workspace
- Building suited sequences vs. accepting mixed-suit compromises
- Deciding when to deal new cards (timing is critical)
- Planning multi-step card rearrangements through empty columns
- Choosing which suit to focus on completing first
In Spider (especially 2-suit and 4-suit), strategy dominates luck. The better you play, the more dramatically your win rate improves.
Which Is More Satisfying?
This is subjective, but players tend to fall into two camps:
Klondike lovers enjoy:
- Quick, self-contained games
- The rhythm of drawing from the stock pile
- The satisfying cascade of auto-completing a won game
- Games they can play during short breaks
Spider lovers enjoy:
- The deep strategic challenge
- The long planning sequences
- The massive payoff of completing a full suited run
- The feeling of solving a complex puzzle
